After Manchester United won The Europa league last season and they failed to finish inside the top four it confirmed that English football would have no less than five representatives in this seasons Champions League. No English club has won the competition since Chelsea in 2012 but since then English teams have struggled to make it into the latter rounds of the competition. It’s got us thinking that with the money being spent in The Premier League at the moment can an English team win The Champions League this season?
Yesterday we got a good sign of that with both Chelsea and Manchester United clocking up big wins on their opening games against FK Qarabag and FC Basel respectively. With Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool all in the mix swell surely we have got a decent chance of getting a winner or atlas someone going far?
So who has the best chance? For me it has to be Manchester City. You look at their squad and just think that if they don’t win something this year something just isn’t right. Their depth and options is outstanding with them being able to play in so many different ways. City have struggled in The Champions League in recent years but I am backing them to do really well this season.
Both Manchester United and Chelsea will also be confident of going the extra mile and the only reason that they aren’t my pick is that either team has the squad depth of City. Chelsea, if they can keep their main stars fit, will be a cracking team to watch and I can see them going far. Manchester United are the same case really and if they can handle the competition well with their league campaign it could be a memorable season for the Old Trafford faithful.
Both Tottenham and Liverpool will be hoping to get into the latter rounds and there is no reason why they can’t. Tottenham have a delightfully talented XI but the squad has little depth and if Harry Kane or Dele Alli pick up an injury it could be tough for the North London side. Also they struggled to play at Wembley last season and with them being there again this season it surely puts doubts in peoples minds about their chances.
Five times Champions League winners Liverpool have the same problems as Tottenham with their squad depth and time will tell if they can get Coutinho motivated to produce the performances that they need. But Liverpool love a european night and Jurgen Klopp is the man that can get the performances to propel the Merseyside club towards the final in Ukraine.
In summary I feel we have a great chance of seeing an English team lift the cup come May and it will be great to see some all English games in the latter rounds which we haven’t had for a while.
