Spartak Moscow Vs Liverpool Match Preview
Spartak Moscow play hosts tonight to five-time European champions Liverpool in the second round of the Champions League, with this being a game much bigger than it may initially seem.
Liverpool have not had the most consistent beginning to the 2017/18 campaign after exiting the Carabao Cup to Leicester mid-week, to then beating the same opposition in the league the following weekend. It has not been the smoothest of starts for Spartak Moscow either with the side from Russia only managing one win in their last six matches in all competitions.
The two teams are placed in group E, the only group with all four teams level with the same amount of points, and a loss to the Russian side could increase the possibility of Klopp’s men being rooted to the bottom of their group with only two matches gone.
Going forward has never really been a problem for the reds, instead their Achilles’ heel has come from conceding cheap goals ultimately down to a series of defensive errors. However, exciting Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes is set to miss the tie due to a sustained calf injury and with tonight seeing star man Saudio Mane returning from his three-match ban for the side from Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp believes ‘We (Liverpool) are ready’. The two sides have only ever played against each other once before in the Russian capital, with Liverpool coming out on top with a 3-1 win.
A win for either side tonight at the Otkrytiye Arena could put them into a strong position in group E, but anything besides a win for Liverpool could see Klopp under the cosh.
