Manchester City have been absolutely brilliant under Pep Guardiola so far in the 2017/18 Premier League season. Blasting past opponents and suffering only one defeat in all competitions so far, City find themselves 12 points clear of Manchester United, in second place, with a game in hand.
However, City have been without skipper Vincent Kompany for most of the season and the City man only lasted ten minutes against Newcastle, suggesting that Guardiola can’t count on the Belgian for long periods of time. City have John Stones and Nicolás Otamendi who have been solid this season but with Mangala as their only reliable back up Guardiola may need to bolster his defensive options. We have out lined three that they should be looking at.
1. Aymeric Laporte
Laporte reportedly snubbed a move to both Chelsea and Manchester City in the summer but Guardiola may be keen to back to the young centre back. The Athletic Bilbao defender would be the perfect long term partner for John Stones as he is only 23 years of age and loves to play on the ball which is exactly how an City like to play. Laporte, who is yet to be capped by France, won’t come cheap and with rumours that both Real Madrid and Barcelona are keen City will have a fight to land him.
2. Inigo Martinez
Another defender from the Spanish La Liga that could tickle Guardiola’s fancy is Real Sociedad star Inigo Martinez. City again require a centre back who is comfortable playing the ball out from the back and Martinez certainly fits the bill, with the versatile defender also able to play at left back – another problem position at the Etihad.
3. Johny Evans
Another player who has constantly been linked with the blue side of manchester although he is a product of Manchester United’s academy. It seems that Evans could be available for a lot less than in the summer with his contract expiring in just 6 months time. The West Brom defender would be perfect and reliable cover for Pep Guardiola and he shouldn’t wouldn’t push the wage bill up by too much.
Who do you think City should sign to cover their defenders?
