AFC Wimbledon, took a step closer to league 1 safety, when despite being held to a 1~1 draw with Accrington Stanley at the Cherry Red Records stadium this afternoon, they actually moved a place higher now occupying 4th bottom.
How did this happen?… well though the Dons were held, by a resilient Accrington Stanley side, themselves fighting for League 1 Survival, Walsall, who were directly above AFC Wimbledon and on the same number of points, were beaten 3~1 at home by Oxford United, who at the same time, guaranteed their own survival.
So AFC Wimbledon, now find themselves in a good posistion, 4th Bottom of the League, but level on points with Southend United on 43 points.
As boss Wally Downes said
We have got ourselves into a good position, which is better than it was & certainly better than when I first arrived in December, so everyone, the fans, players and staff have to stick together now, to ensure that we guarantee survival
The next match for AFC Wimbledon, promises to be a tough test, away to Karl Robinsons Oxford United next Saturday.
3 points at the Kassam stadium, could potentially see them outside the relegation zone for the first time in months and will certainly be one in the eye for the critics, who had written them off.
Scott Wagstaff, Wimbledon’s experienced midfielder, who has been in this posistion before with his previous club Gillingham and in the same league says.
The Gaffer has got the blend right, the boys organised and makes training fun, so we all believe that we can get out of this, though at this time, we have achieved nothing, we just keep on doing out best
Whatever happens, don’t bet against Wimbledon staying up.
