Manchester United extends Odion Ighalo’s loan deal

According to the recent Manchester United official notification on their official website, the English Premier League giants have struck the deal with Shanghai Shenhua to extend the Odion Ighalo’s stint at Old Trafford.

The new deal agreed between the sides will see Ighalo wear the Red Devils’ jersey until the end of January 2021.  The Nigerian striker was seen as the panic signing of Manchester United in the January transfer window but has proved his critics wrong. In his short stint with Red Devils, he has scored four goals in eight games across all the competitions. The season, however, was suspended due to ongoing pandemic.

The former Watford striker initial loan with Manchester United was until the end of May 31.  Due to his impressive performances, however, under Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer, Ighalo has got his contract extended and will stay at the club till the end of January 31 2021.

Initially, the parent club of Odion Ighalo, Shanghai Shenhua were not ready to extend Ighalo’s Manchester United stay until the player signs the new deal. Due to new border rules and regulations, Shanghai Shenhua softened the stance and have allowed the 30-year old to continue playing for the Premier League side.

Despite the contract extension, Ighalo might find it difficult to find the place in the starting XI when the season resumes. Marcus Rashford will be raring to go in the Premier League as he hasn’t featured for Manchester United since January owing to back injury.

The Old Trafford based outfit have nine games left in the Premier League and are in the knockout stages of FA Cup and Europa League. Ighalo is expected to start in these games for Manchester United reducing the load of Anthony Martial and Rashford up front.

On the other hand, the sources close to ESPN have mentioned that the contract extension of Nigerian international will not stop Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from recruiting new players despite the financial crisis due to pandemic. However, Ighalo is expected to enjoy his stay at his boyhood dream club.
