Liverpool v Chelsea: preview

Liverpool continue their title defence on Sunday with a trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday where they will face a new look Chelsea side.

Jurgen Klopp’s Reds will be looking for a more assured performance from his side after they were involved in a thrilling if a little nervy, opening day clash with newly-promoted Leeds United.

Liverpool came out 4-3 winners thanks in the main to a hat-trick from Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian will be hopeful of continuing his form at his old employers on Sunday afternoon.

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea were perhaps second best for much of their first game of the season against Brighton & Hove Albion. Despite a lacklustre performance, the Blues came out on top as 3-1 winners as summer signings Timo Werner and Kai Havertz both made their Chelsea debuts.

The Match

After an eight goal thriller in July at Anfield between the two neutrals might be hopeful of a similar goal-fest.

However it seems unlikely, albeit Lampard’s side remain a little top heavy and Liverpool have shown possible defensive frailties in recent fixtures.

The clash will also bring together two managers who have been having somewhat of a public spat over transfer fees, although the Blues boss is making most of the noise.

The pairs differing opinions follow a pitch-side argument during Liverpool’s 5-3 victory in July. Lampard showing his displeasure at the awarding of a free-kick, which was subsequently scored by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Key Men

Mo Salah’s performance last week was of the very highest order and makes him the important player for the Red’s ahead of Sunday’s encounter. Not just a hat-trick but Salah was sublime throughout and look at his sharpest best.

Timo Werner showed moments of his ability on Monday night and Chelsea fans will be excited from what they have seen from their new man. The German forward was widely expected to join Liverpool so this will be an interesting match-up.

Team News

Liverpool report with almost a clean bill of health bar Kostas Tsimikas who is still unavailable after testing positive for COVID-19 on international duty.

The Reds do have their very latest signing Thiago Alcantara available, although he is unlikely to feature having been with the club less than 72 hours.

Chelsea expect to have Werner available after picking up a knock against Brighton. However the Blues could still be without Ben Chilwell, Christian Pulisic, Thiago Silva and Hakim Ziyech.

Prediction

Expect an attacking match between two entertaining sides but the Premier League champions to come out on top 3-1

Aubameyang double sees Arsenal secure their fourteenth FA Cup against Chelsea

This season was not the easiest for Arsenal as they struggled with manager Unai Emery, before making the change and bringing in former player and Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta. After an improvement in their form since the restart, The Gunners were able to win the London Derby FA Cup matchup against Chelsea, 2-1.

The Blues were able to capitalise first after Christian Pulisic received the ball from Olivier Giroud and found the back of the net just five minutes into the game.

Twenty-minutes later, however, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored from the penalty spot after drawing a foul from César Azpilicueta, who was shown a yellow card for his actions.

In the beginning parts of the first half, Chelsea were looking dominant and it seemed like Pulisic’s goal was going to be the start of a great match. However, the latter half of the half was all Arsenal. Overall, it was not a great first 45 minutes for either of the defences.

After both teams had their fair share of chances to score, it was Arsenal who took the lead in the 67th minute. Captain Aubameyang was once again able to punish Chelsea, who felt that the goal should have been disallowed after an incident between Andreas Christensen and Héctor Bellerín.

Things went from bad to worse for Chelsea as Mateo Kovacic was shown a controversial second yellow card of the game by referee Anthony Taylor for his challenge on Granit Xhaka.

Ultimately, the fourth-place finishers of the Premier League were down to nine men when Pedro, who is set to depart London for AS Roma, needed to receive oxygen before being stretchered off the field to put the cherry on the top of what was already a horrendous match for The Blues.

Although Chelsea were able to have 60 percent of the possession throughout the match, it was Arsenal who were able to finish their chances. The eye-opening statistic was that The Blues committed 14 fouls compared to two for The Gunners.

The North London-side were subsequently able to their 14th FA Cup in the competition’s history, which has helped them clinch a spot in next season’s Europa League, while also knocking out Wolverhampton from the competition.

For Arsenal, they will start its preparations for the next Premier a League season, which is set to start on September 12. Chelsea, meanwhile, will face off against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena next Saturday, but are currently trailing 3-0 on aggregate.

Liverpool celebrate first Premier League title with win against Chelsea in eight-goal thriller

On a night at Anfield where Liverpool were anxiously waiting to celebrate the club’s first Premier League title, they did it the best way possible. The Reds were able to beat Chelsea, the club that Steven Gerard had his infamous slip six years ago, which ultimately led them to not win the league.

Liverpool, who were honored as the champions after the final whistle blew, dominated Chelsea during the first half. This helped them get on the scoresheet first.

After Willian lost the ball, Naby Keita launched a rocket in the top right corner that a diving Kepa Arrizabalaga had no chance of saving.

Fifteen minutes later, Trent Alexander-Arnold scored a beautiful free kick goal that a flat-footed Kepa watched go by into the goal. This occurred due to a nice run by Sadio Mané, who ended up getting fouled by Mateo Kovacic.

Things went from bad to worst for the South London-side when Olivier Giroud’s clearance of a corner kick fell right in front of Georginio Wijnaldum, who had a perfectly striked the ball for their third goal in a span of 20 minutes.

Chelsea were able to cut the deficit to two after Marcos Alonso passed the ball to Willian that was saved by his fellow Brazilian Alisson. However, Giroud was able to slide in to get the ball into the back of the net just before half-time.

The Reds, however, continued their excellent form in the second half by getting a fourth goal in the match courtesy of Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian, who had not scored at home this season, was able to head in a cross from Alexander-Arnold for his ninth goal of the campaign.

The Blues, who had made a triple-substitution moments before hand, were able to score their second after Christian Pulisic made a nice run, which included a nutmeg on Joe Gomez. He later found Tammy Abraham, who tapped in the ball past Alisson.

This electric game kept on going when Callum Hudson-Odom crossed the ball to Pulisic, who was calm and collected as he nailed the top right corner in their comeback attempt.

Just when it appeared that Chelsea were going to have a good chance to tie the game after being four one down,  Liverpool were able to capitalise on a fast break. Left back Andrew Robertson was able to find substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who put the result beyond doubt on a celebratory night for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

If you are a football fan who adores offense, this was the game for you. The eight-goal thriller was a match for the ages as Liverpool were able to dominate on a momentous night for the club and its fanbase across the world.

Liverpool will close out the season on Sunday at Newcastle United. Chelsea, meanwhile, will look to keep their Champions League at home against Wolverhampton, where they will keep track of the Leicester City-Manchester United match for the remaining spots in European’s top club competition.

Chelsea get much-needed win at home against Norwich City

Heading into their matchup on Tuesday, Chelsea were expected to handle Norwich City easily, especially with the match being held at Stamford Bridge. However, The Blues only squeezed by in a nail-bitting 1-0 victory over the already relegated Canaries.

Chelsea held 69 percent of the possession during the first half, with a good chunk of it in the final third at Norwich’s end. Even though it seemed like a one-sided match, The Blues were not able to capitalize on any of their chances.

Towards the end of the first 45 minutes, it looked like this match was heading towards a scoreless half. That was until nearly the end of the three minutes of extra time, when Christian Pulisic crossed the ball, which was headed into the back of the net by Olivier Giroud.

The 2018 World Cup winner has now scored six goals in his last eight Premier League games.  Pretty impressive for a striker who seemed to be on his way out of South London earlier this season.

The two sides played a scoreless second half to end the game at 1-0.

Overall, it was not the dominant victory that Chelsea fans were expecting over a recently relegated Norwich side  but it was what was needed to make Manchester United and Leicester City nervous heading into their respective matches.

The Blues had 22 shots throughout the entire, six of which were on target. The Canaries, however, only had two shots the entire match, none of which were on target as Daniel Farke’s side suffered an eighth consecutive defeat.

Chelsea prepares for an FA Cup semi-final matchup against Manchester United on Sunday before taking on champions Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday. Norwich City, meanwhile, will host Burnley on Saturday.

Chelsea escape Crystal Palace in five-goal thriller

As Chelsea entered the Selhurst Park Stadium, they had a chance to put pressure on teams around them in the standings with a win today. The Blues were ultimately able to squeeze by with a narrow 3-2 away victory over Crystal Palace.

In the early stages of the match, Olivier Giroud scored from the center of the box after receiving a pass from Willian. The chance occurred after Gary Cahill fell to the ground, causing the Brazilian to move freely with the ball in order to find the Frenchman.

Twenty-one minutes after Chelsea opened up the scoresheet, Christian Pulisic continued his hot start and found the back of the net. That was the young American’s third goal in five Premier League appearances since the restart.

The Eagles, however, would get a goal back in the 34th-minute after Wilfried Zaha unleashed a rocket that goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga had no chance of saving.

Palace, subsequently started the second half strongly, until the substitutions of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham in the 65th-minute changed the complexion of the match.

Six minutes after entering the pitch, the substitutes collaborated for Chelsea’s third goal as Loftus-Cheek passed the ball to Abraham, who was able to notch his first goal in quite some time.

The Blues two-goal lead was short lived after Christian Benteke was not only left unmarked but had an empty net after the defense was focusing on Patrick van Aanholt.

Palace had several chances in the end to get a point out of this match, including a header from Scott Dann in the fifth minute of extra time. However, luck was not on their side and the shot came off the post and was ultimately cleared.

Overall, The Blues were able to possess 58 percent of ball throughout the match, while also having 14 shots (6 on goal). On the other side, The Eagles had 13 shots in total, four of which were on goal.

Chelsea, who have now accumulated 60 points this season, will look to keep their Champions League spot this Saturday as they travel to Sheffield United. Crystal Palace, meanwhile, will visit Aston Villa on Sunday.
