Have Fulham learnt from their disastrous £100m spending spree?

After the celebrations of the return of Fulham back to the Premiership at the first time of asking, it is time to take a step back and access their chances of surviving in the Premiership next season.

It is a well know fact in football that sides who get promoted through the play-off route in the Championship, normally struggle.

In recent times the likes of Aston Villa, Huddersfield, Hull City, Norwich City and QPR all finished in the bottom six places in the division.

Two points that may make it possible for Fulham to survive in next seasons campaign would be the Manager and the experience of being in the top flight of English football before.

In Scott Parker they have an astute man in charge of the Cottagers. In the play-off final against Brentford his master tactics came out on top. By spotting the gap at Brentford’s near post and Joe Bryan’s technical ability to find that gap was a pure master stroke from the former West Ham player.

Since Parker has been put in charge, he has turned around the club’s fortunes. Just two years ago on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2018, five players were signed as the clock ticked down to zero.

Fulham spent an astonishing £100 million on no less than twelve players, only to look considerably worse for signing these players.  In season 2018-19 Fulham sacked Slavisa Jokanovic and Claudio Ranieri but a second play-off victory in three seasons gives them a chance to heal some scars.

For the club to survive next season in the top flight of football they will have to learn by their mistakes of 2018. Pointless splashing out that amount of money to try and survive in the Premiership. In truth, it rarely works out.

Parker needs to keep the spine of this current side to have a chance of surviving. The key player to hold on to has to be Aleksandar Mitrovic. The goal machine will learn by his poor return when Fulham were last back in the top flight. If he does so and can get back to a return of around twenty goals in a season, then the London club have a good chance of staying up.

They also need to keep the likes of Tom Cairney, Aboubakar Kamara, Denis Odoi and Tim Ream. If they can hold on to this talented group, then they could realistically keep out of trouble.

Parker will know that the hard work starts now. It will be an interesting few weeks before next seasons campaign as to what he will do in the transfer market. Key to their chances of survival will also be who they bring in.

In terms of the other two promoted sides Leeds United and West Brom. For the Yorkshire club with the flamboyant Marcelo Bielsa managing at the main table this will b e a massive challenge for him. His toughest assignment to date and hardest task for the upcoming season will be to survive.

Under normal circumstances with Leeds outstanding fan base and home fans would be worth a lot of points for the club but the likelihood of having no full capacities for the foreseeable future, this could well go against the Whites.

West Brom under Slaven Bilic look like a side that could well survive next season. Having the advantage of previously being in the Premiership for eight seasons, the Baggies know exactly what is required not to face a relegation battle.

One thing is for sure, having three shrewd and intelligent managers in the form of Parker, Bielsa and Bilic managing in the biggest league in the world and pitting their wits against other more experienced managers is going to be a sight worth seeing.

3 potential replacements to succeed Darren Moore

Subsequently a discouraging draw to Ipswich Darren Moore has been sacked. The Englishman was appointed as head coach in May 2018 after a remarkable end to the season despite West Brom’s relegation. The Baggies have played glamorous football at times this season averaging 1.9 goals per game. A considerable amount of West Brom fans have deemed the sacking harsh , however others have argued that their home form has been less than impressive. Here are 3 potential replacements that could succeed Darren Moore.

David Wagner

The German-American has previously managed 2 clubs , Bourissia Dortmund II and Huddersfield Town. Wagner , 47 , is most commonly known for the wonders he worked at Huddersfield Town. David Wagner took charge of the Terriers for 154 games across 4 seasons. In 16/17 Wagner miraculously won promotion with Huddersfield via the play offs. Additionally preserving Huddersfields Premier league status the following season. However it could be said that Wagner couldn’t cut it in his second season of premier league football winning just 2 games before he left the club by mutual consent in January. Notwithstanding when David Wangner left Huddersfield he stated that he wanted a break from management.

Slaviša Jokanović

Slaviša Jokanović is reportedly the leading contender for the West Brom job. The Serbian has managed a number of clubs , first managing in 2007 for FK Partizan Belgrade and most recently Fulham , Jokanović has managed a total of 309 games. Jokanović had his contract terminated with Fulham in November 2018 after gaining promotion , likewise via the play offs earlier in 2018. He was recognised for possession and attacking football while in the championship. However Jokanovićs style of play didn’t cut it in the Premier league and his side were found leaking goals. The Serbian has had managerial success in his home country winning the Serbian league twice and additionally the Serbian cup twice.

Carlos Carvalhal

The final and most experienced manager on this shortlist is Carlos Carvalhal , his managerial career has spanned over two decades the majority of which being in Portugal. Carvalhals time in England has seen him manage two clubs , Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea. His time at Sheffield Wednesday saw him manage 131 games , unlike the previous two managers he was incapable of gaining promotion to the Premier league despite being just one game away in 2016 when his side were beaten 1-0 in the Championship play off final. Alike the alternative managers Carvalhal has had experience in the Premier league nonetheless Carlos was only in charge for 25 games before leaving by mutual consent following Swanseas relegation form the Premier League.

Will we see West Brom go for a more experienced defensive manager likeCarlos Carvalhal or alternatively a more attacking style manager with attractive football like Slaviša Jokanović. Its no doubt that the Baggies will look to replace Darren Moore in a swift fashion as they still potentially could be promoted.

Who do you think West Brom will appoint?

Will Fulham land this Premier League striker?

Fulham have been heavily linked with Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle, following the departure of Sone Aluko who joined Reading on a four year deal.

With the London outfit selling Aluko it leaves them with five strikers on their books, but manager Slavisa Jokanovic appears to want to bolster his ranks ahead of the transfer window shutting on Thursday.

Fulham have started the season with a record of 1 win, 3 draws and 1 defeat and are currently 14th place in the Championship table. Jokanovic will be hoping that he can guide the club to promotion this season, after losing in the play-off semi finals last term to Reading.

The club are going to need to improve their goal scoring tally so far this season, as they have only found the back of the net on 4 occasions in 5 games and this is obviously the thinking of Jokanovic as the club are linked with prolific Championship goal scorer Dwight Gayle.

Dwight Gayle – The striker scored 23 goals in 34 games for Newcastle last term in the Championship but was left out the squad for last Saturdays match against West Ham, which started the rumours that he would leave St James’ Park in this transfer window.

One stumbling block for Fulham, could be that Newcastle are looking for in the region of £20m for the striker, but if they want to add quality to their ranks they are going to have to stump up the money.

Having gained promotion with Newcastle last term, Gayle knows what it takes to help get a club out of the Championship and could prove to be a terrific signing if Fulham get the deal done on deadline day.
