ENGLAND v BELGIUM preview

Following Scotland Qualifying for their first major tournament since 1998, England now know that they will face their old rivals at next year’s delayed Euro Championships. Scotland beat Serbia on penalties after Alexander Mitrovic missed the Serb’s final spot-kick to set up an exciting Euro Group Game.

Before then both nations have Nations League business to attend to. England face Belgium away knowing they must win if they are to top their group and repeat the semi-final appearance in 2019. Scotland meanwhile are four points clear at the top of their group with two fixtures remaining meaning promotion to League A is highly likely. England are in the position because of a defeat and draw against Denmark, which under minded their impressive victory against Belgium at Wembley.

Gareth Southgate has announced Jack Grealish will make his first competitive England start after impressing in recent appearances, Grealish is likely to play on the left of a front three and replace Marcus Rashford who withdrew from the squad along with Joe Gomez, and Conor Coady whilst Harry Maguire and Reece James are suspended. This leaves boss Southgate with some tough choices on who lines up in defence. He is likely to stay with a back three with Kyle Walker, Eric Dier, and Michael Keane starting. However, there is a lack of wing-backs available in the squad with Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Bukayo Saka the only options which may force Southgate to change to a back four. In midfield, I expect to see Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson either as a two or alongside Mason Mount depending on the formation. Harry Kane will return upfront to earn his 50th cap in which he has netted 32 times. Jaden Sancho is the most likely to complete the front three although Phil Foden is an alternative.

Elsewhere there have been mixed fortunes for the Home Nations as Wales are battling with Finland to win Group B4 whilst the Republic Of Ireland are looking to avoid relegation from the same group. The two nations face each other next up before Wales face a group decider against Finland. Northern Ireland lost their Euro play-off final against Slovakia in extra time after equalising late on in the 90 minutes. They are bottom of nations league group B1 and have a huge task to avoid relegation.

Chelsea maintain Champions League spot with much-needed victory against Wolverhampton

Win or draw, keep your spot in the Champions League. Lose and you will be playing in the Europa League next season. Chelsea were ultimately able to rise to the occasion, defeating Wolverhampton 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

After the first 45 minutes, it looked like this match was heading towards a scoreless first half. That was until Marcos Alonso was fouled in the attacking half by Pedro Neto. Mason Mount would eventually score the free kick to help Chelsea keep its Champions League spot.

In the fourth minute of extra-time in the first half, The Blues doubled their lead over Wolves following a fast break by the South London-side, where Mount found Olivier Giroud, who got past goalkeeper Rui Patricio and found the back of the net.

The two clubs had chances to score in the second half but both were unable to capitalise as the game ended at 2-0.

Overall, Chelsea dominated with 63 percent of the possession throughout the game, while taking 11 shots (three on target). However, Wolverhampton struggled with five shots in the game, only one which was on target (easily saved by Willy Caballero).

At the end of the Premier League season, Chelsea will finish in fourth place with 66 points after Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Leicester City. On the other side, Wolverhampton slipped down to seventh place after Tottenham’s 1-1 result at Crystal Palace.

This season was unlike any other from Liverpool winning their first ever Premier League title to the COVID-19 pandemic delaying matches until June. It was not ideal but it was still a fantastic season filled with trials and tribulations for the 20 clubs in the league.

Chelsea will prepare for their FA Cup final matchup on Sunday against crosstown rivals Arsenal. Wolverhampton, meanwhile, have a Europa League match at home against on August 6 Olympiakos, where they are tied at one on aggregate.

Chelsea defeat Manchester United to advance to FA Cup final

They say that the third time’s a charm, but Chelsea needed a fourth battle to finally defeat Manchester United as they stamped their ticket to the FA Cup final.

In seemed like both squads were going to head into the halftime break scoreless. That was until the 11th-minute of extra-time, when Olivier Giroud, who has been exceptional since the restart, found the back of the net after receiving a cross for César Azpilicueta.

The Blues entering the second half up by one against The Red Devils, subsequently they came out of the gates storming. After a poor pass from Brandon Williams, Mason Mount pounced on the ball and capitalise on the opportunity to put the South London-side one-step closer to their first final since 2017.

It went from bad to worse for  The Red Devils in the 74th-minute, when Harry Maguire’s studs connected to a cross from Marcos Alonso, which ended up getting past David de Gea.

Manchester United were able to get their consolation in the 85th-minute courtesy of a penalty from Bruno Fernandes. This sequence was caused by Callum Hudson-Odoi fouling Anthony Martial in the penalty area.

Overall, Chelsea dominated the game and caused the Red Devil’s de Gea to experience hell on Earth with a performance to forget. Even though Manchester United held 51 percent of the possession,  The Blues managed almost twice as many attempts on goal (13 to seven) and had less shots on target (seven to three).

Chelsea will now prepare for its battle against cross-city rivals Arsenal in the FA Cup final at Wembley. However, their next game is a Premier League matchup against the champions, Liverpool, on Wednesday at Anfield. Manchester United, meanwhile, will play hosts to West Ham United on Wednesday as they vie for a Champions League spot.
