Are Ipswich Town set to sign this prolific striker on a free transfer this summer?

Ipswich Town are already plotting their future with news this week coming out that the clubs owner Marcus Evans is set to make a decision on manager Mick McCarthy’s future and now reports are circulating that the club are looking at signing AFC Wimbledon striker Lyle Taylor this summer.

The ‘Tractor Boys’ are set to face competition for the ‘Dons’ striker signature and its easy to see why. Taylor has found the back of the net on 15 occasions already this season and with his contract coming to an end this summer, this could be a lure for clubs to race to sign him.

It’s the third season on the run that Taylor has hit double figures with goals and as well as being able to play as a central striker the 27-year-old can also play on either wing offering versatility to his game.

With the club starting to look towards signings for the summer does this suggest that Mick McCarthy is set to stay on as manager beyond the end of the season?

This is something for sure that Taylor would want to know before joining the ‘Tractor Boys’ so he knows the manager who brings him to the football club has a future and also so he knows he features in his plans longterm.

If Ipswich do go ahead and sign Taylor this summer, then he will have to take his opportunity when he gets it, as the club already have 5 strikers on their books in the first team.

3 possible replacements if Mick McCarthy leaves Ipswich Town?

  1. Mark Warburton

Mark Warburton is a proven manager who in the long-term, can do a brilliant job in building a club towards where they want to be. Especially at Brentford, who he took from League One to the Play-Offs to get into the Premier League. In Scotland, he got Rangers promoted back into the Scottish Premiership and built the bulk of a side which is doing extremely well north of the border. He did not, however, achieve the expected goals of Nottingham Forest. But if Ipswich decide to let go of McCarthy, Warburton would be an excellent managerial choice.

2. Jaap Stam

After recently being sacked by Reading, Stam is on the lookout for a new job. He knows the Championship well and was incredibly close to guiding the Royals to the Premier League, losing on penalties to Huddersfield Town in the Play-Off Final. He may not achieve instant success if he were to come to Portman Road but would be able to restart his career and build a squad capable of fighting every team in the Championship and guiding the Tractor Boys up the table.

3. Steve Cotterill

Cotterill has been in football management since 1995, and is extremely experienced in the Championship. He has won the Conference, League Two, League One but not the Championship. This could be his opportunity at a big club, with big expectations. His previous job at Birmingham City did not go as well as expected, but the club was in a dire situation and is still in a relegation battle. At a club with more money, better situation, more quality players, Cotterill could do a fantastic job in guiding Ipswich up the league.
