3 potential managers to replace Pep Clotet

Oxford United this morning sacked manager Pep Clotet. The Spaniard only took over the ‘Us’ in July but a defeat to bottom side Bury was the final straw for the owners and he was relieved of his duties, with his assistant manager Dereck Fazackerley taking over first-team duties until further notice.

We take a look at three potential candidates that could replace Pep Clotet in the Oxford hot seat.

Michael Appleton

One of the early favourites for the job and a fans favourite, Michael Appleton would be welcomed back at the Kassam Stadium with open arms. Having led Oxford to promotion from League Two and to, two Football League Trophy finals its no wonder he is favourite for the job.

He was the caretaker manager at Leicester City for a couple of games in between them sacking Craig Shakespeare and appointing Claude Puel as manager, and has continued at the club as assistant manager to Puel, and having only been in the role a short time it remains to be seen whether he would leave so soon.

Simon Grayson

Having been linked with both the vacant Oxford and MK Dons jobs, if Oxford want to land Grayson they are going to have to move fast. He (Simon Grayson) has a good track record of getting clubs out of League One and into the Championship having led Leeds, Huddersfield, Blackpool and Preston to English football’s second tier and with a wealth of experience, he could be the perfect fit for Oxford United.

Brian McDermott

Remembered for his time at Reading FC, McDermott is another experienced choice to replace Clotet. In his first spell in charge of the ‘Royals’ he led the club to the Premier League before he was sacked by the club following a run of successive defeats.

From here he joined Leeds United, before holding roles as a scout for Arsenal FC and then a return to Reading, and has been out of management since 2016. With a promotion to the Premier League on his CV, McDermott could be a terrific appointment as manager.
