Sheffield United. Is double promotion on the cards?

Sheffield United, a glorious and historic club which has just gained promotion from League One after six painful campaigns. The Blades are under the management of lifelong fan, “he’s one of their own,” Chris Wilder. But once promotion was achieved, what then for Wilder’s men? Was the aim to stay up? A predicted table saw them averagely finishing the 2017/18 season in 16th place.

However, the Blades have been proving their doubters wrong, winning five of their opening seven fixtures, conceding only six goals in that time. But the question on everyone’s lips is “can it last?”

It certainly can, as seen previously with Southampton and Norwich City, both gaining promotion from League One and then the Championship at the first time of asking. Momentum is a huge part of the Championship, and those clubs had it, and elements are being seen at Bramall Lane at the moment. They certainly have the momentum and the power, of both the Championship and the Steel City.

The early tester for Wilder’s men would be at Hillsborough. Not only home to a Play-Off contender, but the Blades’ fiercest rivals, Sheffield Wednesday. The Owls were massive favourites, but being lead by a man with the mind of a manager and the passion of a fan, how far wrong can you go? United won 4-2, with Wednesday only having two shots on goal, proving the dominance of the team in Red. People’s opinions changed after that performance, the Blades are being recognised.

So will Sheffield United go all the way? Will they make the Play-Offs? They certainly can. But football is football, and there’s a long way to go until May. But if one thing is for sure, those six years are long forgotten. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below…

Is it time for a change?

Sheffield Wednesday fans endured the agony of losing to local rivals Sheffield United in yesterday’s Steel City Derby. The Blades ran out 4-2 winners at Hillsborough thanks to goals from John Fleck, Mark Duffy and former Wednesday player Leon Clarke bagged a brace.

After the fulltime whistle some Sheffield Wednesday fans thought that it was the end for manager Carlos Carvalhal, venting their frustrations and anger on fans forum sites.

Carvalhal took Sheffield Wednesday to the playoff semi-finals last season, but defeat against Huddersfield Town meant that they would have to endure another season of Championship football.

The Owls have started the season with just 3 victories in their opening 9 matches and currently lie in 10th place in the league table, 5 points behind rivals Sheffield United who are currently flying high in 3rd.

There were calls for the Portuguese manager to go following the playoff defeat last season, but the club came out and announced that he would be staying on as manager, and they backed their man this summer allowing him to bring in the likes of George Boyd, Joost Van Aken, and Jacob Butterfield, in hope that they would be the men to guide the club out of the Championship and back to the Premier League.

Even though there have only been 9 games of the league campaign and some football fans will say it’s far too early to be thinking about sacking a manager, some sections of the Hillsborough faithful thought yesterday was enough and want to see a change at the helm.
